Voice typing, or speech-to-text technology, allows you to dictate and have them typed automatically for you—no more worrying about hand strain or discomfort from typing for long periods.
One of my clients was recently struggling with arthritic hands and this has made the whole process so much easier for her.
Here’s how you can use this feature to create content effortlessly in WordPress.
Step 1: Make Sure You Have a Working Microphone
To use voice typing, you’ll need a microphone. Most computers, laptops, and smartphones have built-in microphones, but if you’re using a desktop, you might need to connect an external microphone. Once you’re ready, make sure the microphone is working properly by testing it.
Step 2: Open WordPress and Start a New Post or Page
- Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
- To create a new post, navigate to Posts > Add New. If you want to create a page, go to Pages > Add New.
- You’ll be taken to the WordPress editor where you can start typing your content.
Step 3: Enable Voice Typing Using Your Browser’s Built-in Speech-to-Text Feature
Most modern browsers like Google Chrome support speech-to-text features. Here’s how to use voice typing in WordPress:
Using Google Chrome:
- Click in the text editor box where you want to start typing in WordPress.
In the Google search bar (or any other text box), you may see a microphone icon. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + S (on Windows) or Command + Shift + S (on a Mac). - A pop-up will appear asking for permission to use your microphone—click Allow.
Once enabled, you can begin speaking, and your words will appear as text in the WordPress editor.
Step 4: Speak Clearly and Naturally
When using voice typing, speak clearly and at a comfortable pace. The more natural you sound, the better the system will transcribe your words accurately. If you need to insert punctuation, just say it aloud (e.g., “full-stop,” “comma,” “question mark”). You can also say “new paragraph” or “new line” to help format your content. You can click on the microphone at any time to stop and review what’s been written.
Step 5: Review and Edit Your Content
While voice typing is incredibly accurate, it’s always a good idea to double-check your content for any mistakes or words that may have been misheard. You can edit the text by typing or using voice commands as you would normally.
Step 6: Publish Your Post
Once you’ve finished dictating and are satisfied with your content, simply click Publish (or Update if you’re editing an existing post) to make your content live on your WordPress site.
Tip: Use Voice Commands for Formatting
In addition to typing, many speech-to-text tools support basic formatting commands. You can say things like:
“Bold [text]”
“Italic [text]”
“Underline [text]”
Check the settings of your browser’s voice typing tool to see what formatting commands are available.
Why You Should Try Voice Typing in WordPress
Voice typing isn’t just a great feature for those with arthritis—it’s a powerful tool for anyone who wants to save time and reduce the strain of typing. It’s especially helpful for people who need to write a lot of content, allowing them to focus on their ideas rather than on typing.
If you find yourself struggling with hand pain, or just want an easier, faster way to create content in WordPress, voice typing is definitely worth trying!
