SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) new Regulation will come into effect in September and will have an impact for European customers buying online.

It will require businesses to add another layer of authentication into online card payments i.e. customers will not be able to check out just using their credit or debit card details but another form of ID.  The legislation forms part of the PSD2 ‘open banking’ regulations.

Card transactions below €30 are considered low value and will be exempt unless the customer initiates five consecutive low value payments or if the total payments value exceeds €100, SCA will be required.
